Illinois Unemployment Rate Moves Downward in Six Metro Areas

Job Growth Mixed Among Industry Sectors

Chicago, Illinois - August not-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates decreased in six metropolitan areas while increasing in four, as compared to one year ago, according to statistics released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).  The largest declines were in the Illinois section of Davenport-Moline-Rock Island (-1.2 points to 4.8%), Chicago (–0.8 point to 6.2%) and the Decatur (-0.7 point to 7.0%) metropolitan areas. The metro areas with increased unemployment rates were Bloomington-Normal (+0.5 point to 3.2%), Kankakee (+0.3 point to 7.8%), Champaign-Urbana (+0.1 point to 3.5%) and the Illinois section of the St. Louis metropolitan area (+0.1 point to 7.1%). Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana metro areas, however, continue to have the lowest unemployment rates among the ten metro areas.

Non-farm jobs increased (not-seasonally adjusted) in the Chicago, Decatur, Peoria-Pekin, and Springfield metro areas. Five metro areas registered August job declines: Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, the Illinois section of St. Louis, and Rockford. Kankakee total jobs remained the same over the year.

"Clearly, the lower unemployment rates in most metro areas indicate an improved horizon for jobs in those areas," states Brenda A. Russell, IDES Director. "Three of these - Chicago, Peoria-Pekin, and Decatur - also posted modest job increases in manufacturing, a sector that has struggled in recent years," Russell notes.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security administers federally-funded employment services and unemployment insurance throughout the state, including its 55 local offices called Illinois Employment and Training Centers. IDES also receives federal grants to provide and analyze labor market statistics and information.
