Search for New York Jobs Now New York's private sector job count increased in June by 2,800, or less than 0.1 percent, to 6,978,100 (seasonally adjusted), essentially mirroring the nation’s rate of 0.1 percent for the same time period, the State Labor Department reported today. Since August 2003, the state's seasonally adjusted private sector job count has increased by more than 72,000. Additionally, the state added 66,800 private sector jobs (not seasonally adjusted) between June 2003 and June 2004, the largest year-to-year private sector job gain since March 2001. “New York’s economy continues to show signs of growth, adding private sector jobs for the tenth consecutive month, and essentially mirroring the nation in private sector job growth in June. Since August 2003, the state has gained more than 72,000 private sector jobs, and the year-to-year job growth between June 2003 and June 2004 is the largest since March 2001,” said David J. Trzaskos, director of the Division of Research and Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate, after seasonal adjustment, was 6.2 percent in June 2004. The rate was 5.8 percent in May. The nation’s rate for June was 5.6 percent, unchanged from May. In New York City, the unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in June 2004. In May, the City’s rate was 7.0 percent. The top 50 firms in New York State based on employment account for 9.3 percent of the private sector jobs in New York State. Over half of New York’s largest private sector employers are concentrated in just two industry sectors, retail trade and finance and insurance. Retail trade accounted for 17 of the top 50 employers and about one-third of the employment in the top 50 firms, while finance and insurance accounted for 11 of the top 50 employers and one-fifth of the employment in the top 50 firms. Seven other industry sectors had at least one of the state’s top 50 private sector employers. The manufacturing (5), education services (3), utilities (2), and transportation and warehousing (2) sectors all included more than one employer on the top 50 list. Interestingly, while the employment of the large retailers was spread across the state roughly in line with the distribution of the population, the employment of the large financial firms was concentrated in New York City and the employment of the large manufacturers was concentrated in specific metropolitan areas. The entire top 50 list appears below. The information in this article was classified by industry, using the new North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Three sectors — information, professional and technical services, and administrative and waste services — had one employer among the top 50. Eleven NAICS industry sectors did not include a single firm on the top 50 list. Most of the establishments on the list are quite well known; however, some readers may not have heard of Adecco North America LLC. The firm provides personnel and project services, including temporary help. Search for New York Jobs Now |
